I read a few months ago that Rogers estimates that is average client spends just shy of $70 per month on their cell bill. My average: 4 - 5 times that ... Ouch!!

I tend to complain a lot about this, but it doesn't matter what I do, I can't seem to get my cell bill under three to four hundred dollars a month .... its actually more expensive than our property taxes. Amazing. In the past, when I would get a rather huge bill-usually because of something new I started doing on my phone without thinking-I would call Rogers and ask why I was not informed that checking my email a couple times a day without a data plan would cost me $800 a month. That call resulted in me being told: tough luck.... get a data plan.

I think something has changed at Rogers recently. A change that I think is for the better. A couple months ago I was down in the US for a few days. While there I answered my phone when people called, made a few calls, checked my email. The usual stuff. I figured my bill would be a bit higher than usual - wasn't quite expecting over $350 in roaming for three days!

As I was going to be traveling to the US again in a couple weeks, I figured I'd call rogers and see if they had a roaming plan that would help curb those costs. While I was speaking to them, I explained that I wasn't really expecting that high a bill. Without hesitation, the person on the other end of the line credited the full roaming charges back to my account .... I didn't even ask for it. Very nice.

I figured I just ran into someone nice, but this morning I called to find out what my bill was going to be, and again there were a couple out of the ordinary charges ... mainly for this daily horoscope text message thing that I don't even remember subscribing to. Again, the person I was talking to reversed the charge without me even asking.

Now I don't know if this is a new policy, or just some luck on my part, but the lesson is this - if you get an out of the ordinarily large bill from Rogers, give them a call. There's a good chance they'll help you out!

Talk soon.

Is it time to "Upgrade" to Tiger?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but my mac is driving me NUTS!!! It's been over a year and a half since my switch to the Mac, and in that time I've been thrilled. I've even convinced some friends to make the switch. Its been AWESOME ... until two weeks ago.

Last week, I made the decision to install Leopard. I figured the first patch (10.5.1) had come out, and the majority of the bugs would be worked out. I also checked to make sure all the applications I use on my mac were ready for Leopard. I did a fresh install of the OS. Not one of the archive and install or worse yet ... upgrade .... options. Installed iLife 08, iWork 08, Final Cut Studio, and a couple other apps and was off to the races. Or so I thought.

Before I go any further, I'll tell you that Tiger (10.4.x) was the most stable operating system I've used to date (no, I've never tried linux). My MacBook Pro would stay on, or in sleep mode, without a true restart for months at a time. Pure bliss compared to XP. In the two weeks since installing Leopard, my notebook has crashed (BSOD for the mac) about once every two days. In fact, I'm writing this post hoping that my computer doesn't lock up again and force me to restart again.

Now I'll admit that I like some of the features of Leopard .... easy screen sharing with my Mac Mini is great, and spaces is fantastic (especially with two screens). I'm also a big fan of the new iChat, iCal, and Mail applications.

I guess I'm kind of feeling like a windows user again. Constantly restarting my computer. Turning it off instead of putting it to sleep. I'm also not recommending the switch to anyone who asks ... one of the big pluses for me with Tiger was its stability, and now that thats gone, how can you ask someone to make a switch to a new UI thats just as unreliable.

I'm envious of my wife, with her nice white MacBook that's still running Tiger, and hasn't had to be rebooted since I installed Leopard and have restarted like a million times .... crappy.

I guess this leave me with the question: Is it time to "Upgrade" to Tiger?

What do you think?

Crawford Electrical Contracting Gets A New Look

Hi all,

Just a quick note to ask you to check out Crawford Electrical Contracting's new website at www.crawfordelectrical.ca. Irving Dobrutsky Syndrome relates to the unfortunate experience of having little, or no control over your "online image".

We all have a long time family friend that, since we were young, we called "uncle". He's not really our uncle, but he might as well be. For me, its Uncle Irving. Uncle Irving is about the same age as my dad. They've known each other since they were six, which is about sixty seven years.

Irving called me up a few months ago and asked me what seemed to be a simple question: how do you get something that is untrue, and malicious, taken off Google. Needless to say, the answer simple, but you're not going to like it - you can't. The thing about the internet is anybody can say anything, and there is nothing you can do about it. If that person's page gets indexed by Google, now you have a bigger problem. Do a Google search for "Irving Dobrutsky" and you'll see what I mean.

The only way to combat Irving Dobrutsky Syndrom is to try and take control of your "online image". This might seem a bit daunting if you're not tech-savvy, but believe it or not, this is actually a fairly easy process. Your first step is to get yourself a Blogger account and start a blog like the one you're reading. If you prefer, there are other blogging websites out there, but as Blogger is owned by Google, my suggestion is to start there. If you do a search for "Blue Melnick", you'll see that my blog is the first item to appear on the search results. A blog can also be a great way for you to respond to mis-truths that are out there about you.

From here, there are literally hundreds of other ways to get your name out there, with the ultimate goal of burying the malicious statements. Here are a couple that most people can do fairly easily.

If you have expertise that you think you can share with the world, you can also set up an account at Ezine Articles (www.ezinearticles.com) and submit an article. Again, referencing the search you did for "Blue Melnick", you'll see that that is the second listing for me.

If you own your own company, create your own executive bio page on your website. Also, list your name in other areas of your website. They did so by having enough Quebecentric items in the most recent proposed budget for the Bloc Quebequois to vote with them.

The Liberals and the NDP have decided that they're not happy with the budget, and voting against it would be their best bet at a spring election. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer to continue our trend at becoming the next Italy when it comes to leadership turnaround.

On a related note, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has booted former cabinet minister Joe Comuzzi from the party's caucus because of his plans to vote with the Conservatives on the budget. Comuzzi said he is doing so because the budget contains funding for a molecular cancer research centre that employs 300 people in his riding.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't our elected officials supposed to represent the people that elected them? This is the sort of thing that has me completely disinterested in politics. You have a politician that does something right for a change, and the political system punishes him.

With Comuzzi not intending on running in the next election (he's 73), his decision seems to be based on principle rather than political survival.

Way to go Joe !! Someone has sued YouTube for .... wait for it .... One Billion Dollars !!!

Viacom, the parrent company of Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks, Comedy Central, MTV, CMT, etc..., is suing YouTube for damages relating to copyright infringement. From the press release:

"There is no question that YouTube and Google are continuing to take the fruit of our efforts without permission and destroying enormous value in the process."
You can read the entire release here.

I understand that Viacom owns the content it creates, and if someone where to profit from the content without their consent, there should be measures taken to curtail that profit, but the content placed on YouTube has done the opposite of what they are saying it has done ("destroying enormous value"). If it where not for YouTube, I would never have started to watch the Colbert Report or the Daily Show, among other things. I'm sure I'm not alone in that statement.

YouTube, Google Video, and other online content providers like them, are free advertising for companies like Viacom. They have the infrastructure set up. They have the eyeballs coming to their site. In fact, there are many content providers here in Canada, and elsewhere around the world, putting clips on YouTube in the hopes of driving traffic to their website and television stations. These companies get it. They understand the power of having content on YouTube. Viacom, obviously does not.

I think that YouTube, and their parent company Google, should turn around and sue Viacom. In America, where you can sue anybody for any reason, I think Google would have a case. Viacom has unfairly benefited from the clips posted on YouTube without sharing in the increased revenue that it has generated. In fact, I think Google could make an argument that Viacom has not sufficiently protected their content, making it available to upload to services like YouTube. If Viacom did not want to benefit from YouTube's free advertising, they would have employed proper DRM .... wouldn't they?

Final word ... Google, please sue Viacom .... you have a case :)

Blue

Chilean Wine from Collingwood?

Hi all,

Long time no type ... we've been crazy busy for the past couple months. Between Virtual Tape Drive and ski instructing, its been one heck of a winter.

I'd like to share what thought was a very funny situation with you. A few weeks ago, a friend of the family came up to visit us in Collingwood for the weekend. On the Saturday night, he took us out for dinner to Catch 22. Catch 22, as you might have guessed, is a great seafood restaurant, and if you're up in the area, I highly recommend it.

When we asked the waitress about the house wines, she told us about three different ones. The first two are unimportant ... its the third that made me laugh: a home made Chilean wine. Now here's the question: We're in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.... just over 5,000 miles away from Chile. How in the world can you call it Chilean wine if its made in Collingwood. Perhaps a "Chilean-like" wine would be more appropriate, or maybe even a "tastes just like Chilean" wine. But to simply call it Chilean?

Anyway, I'm sure there are some wine makers out there who would be able to explain why its OK to call it Chilean ... but honestly, no explanation required. I just thought it was funny :)

Talk to you again soon.
Blue

iPhone to come to Canada "Shortly"

Hello all. As you know by now, I'm a bit Apple fan. I use a Mac for my computer, an iPod for my music, and soon, hopefully, an iPhone for all my portable communication.

With all the excitement regarding the iPhone last week, one thing was missing ... when will this awesome new product be available in Canada? Will it be Rogers, Bell, Telus, or Fido? We all know that the answer to the second question is Rogers or Fido, as the phone is a GSM phone.

The thing we really don't know is when. Steve mentioned June for the US, and mentioned time frames for Europe and Asia, but nothing for Canada. In my quest to find out whether I would have to move the US come June, I sent Rogers an email asking if and when they would be releasing the iPhone. Here is the response.

The following should address your inquiry.

We are happy to let you know we are going to be carrying the Apple iPhone very shortly.

Should you have any further questions or require further assistance in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact us at your convenience.

Not really an answer I know, but shortly to me means very soon after its released in the US, if not at the same time.

Lets hope I'm right :)

Blue

Horrible Customer Service Experience

I was hoping not to start the year off with a negative post, but to be honest, I can't help but write about this one.

Both my wife and I are recent Mac converts. In fact, Erin switched before I did. Since getting my MacBook Pro back in April, I have had several opportunities to evaluate Apple's customer service. My first experience was a battery recall, which went perfectly smoothly. I filled out my 2 serial numbers on their website, and within a week I received two replacement batteries, along with return postage. No problem. My second experience was a Logic Board replacement .... for those of you not yet on the Mac bandwagon, that's the motherboard of the mac. While I didn't need to get this done, it helped with a couple minor anoyances I was experiencing with my MacBook Pro. Again, the process was simple. I took my computer into the closest service center (Mac Solutions in Barrie, ON). They confirmed the problem, and ordered the part. Two weeks later I took my computer in for the operation, and had it back within two hours. Again ... No Problem.

Now I come to my third experience, and the true subject of my post today. I have been having problems with my Line-In port. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. It works perfectly with an iPod or other stereo equipment, but not so much with my microphone (before you jump to respond, please continue to read, as I now know what the issue is). I've been holding off fixing the problem, as it hasn't really been an issue. Today, seeing as we work right above an Authorized Apple Service Center, I decided to try and have the issue fixed. I walked in this morning before I went upstairs to work and let them know what the problem was. I then left them my card and asked them to give me a call when their technicians were free, as I could run the computer down in 30 seconds. So far so good.

I got the call this afternoon. Without hesitation, I ran downstairs with my MacBook Pro in hand. I walked into the store to a new face. I explained the situation, and asked to make sure that the tech would look at it right away as I could bring it back when he was free ... just in case something came up from the time that I took the call to the time that I dropped the computer off. This was met with a look of disgust, and not much in the way of acknowledgment. Not so good.

As an afterthought, I asked the "new face" if he could have the technician take a look at one other thing. When I had my Logic Board replaced, my serial number is no longer listed in the "About This Mac" window. Having read multiple posts on Apple's discussion boards, I know that this is something that can be rectified by an authorized service center. The new face said he didn't know, disappeared to ask the tech, and came back and said ... "If you have the original Logic Board". Are you kidding me? If I have the original Logic Board !!! IT WAS SENT BACK TO APPLE YOU SARCASTIC ASS. You could have just said: "I'm sorry, we can't do that."

He then asks why this is important. So I explain that its easier than removing the battery when I call customer service, or take the computer in for support. His next question: "How often do you call support?" Ok, this is just getting worse. He then proceeds to explain to me that could always right the number down on a piece of paper, or even save it in a document. At this point, I've had enough abuse, and just tell him to forget about it ... again ... SARCASTIC ASS!!!

When I go back ten minutes later to see how the test went, I'm told that the port is working exactly as it should. When I ask them if I can see how they determined that, they said by plugging something into the port and recording from it. "Ok .... can I see this device and give it a try myself?", I asked. At this point "new face" and a technician walk into the back room. They return to tell me that the only they'll help further is for me to pay them $60 per hour. That's right, $60 per hour to hand me an iPod, a cable, and let me test the port myself!!

At this point I just walked out. What a complete waste of time!

Here's what should have happened... When I walked in this morning and told them what the problem was, they should have simply said that the line-in doesn't work with standard computer mics. I would have thanked them for their help, and continued to use them for service on my three macs, and possibly for new purchases.

Instead I say this: If you live in downtown Toronto, and need service, or are thinking about buying anything Mac related: Do not, under any circumstance, walk anywhere close to ClickOn Mac Solutions. Not only are they rude and overpriced (they're selling used PowerBooks for the same price you can get a refurbished MacBook Pro from Apple), but they don't know what they're talking about.

If you use ClickON Mac Solutions because they're in the area, walk five minutes north to Queen and Broadview and go to Carbon Computing. I've been in there several times, and not only is the atmosphere much closer to The Apple Store, the people are friendlier, and much more knowledgeable.

Thanks for reading, and please digg this story.

Blue

BTW: Apple, if you're listening, these people are not who you want representing your brand.

Marriage is about compromise?

I've heard it said many times, as I'm sure you have: Marriage is about compromise. I've been married to Erin for 2 1/2 years now, and I can say with total confidence: WHAT A CROCK!!

From my perspective, for people to say that marriage is about compromise implies, to me at least, an unhappy and conflicting relationship. I mean seriously, do you really want to spend the rest of your life with somebody who you're constantly compromising with? If you're lucky, you marry someone who has a lot of the same ideas and goals in life as you do. This translates into a life working together to achieve a common goal, whatever that may be.

Now, if people were to change the saying to "life is about compromise", then I would have nothing to say. Life is about compromise, whether its at work, with family (as I'm sure most of you endured this holiday season), or with friends.

In closing, I wish this for all of you: a married life without compromise .... or as little as possible ;)

Happy holidays!
Blue

Barber Shop Shave

Late last week Erin and I were on our way home when I finally broke down. I decided that after months of putting it off, it was time. Time to get a hair cut. It didn't hurt that one of our business partners called me Pippin (Lord of the Rings) after seeing our holiday greeting video :)

As we're new to our neighborhood, we decided to try out the local barber shop on Queen St: George's Barber Shop. As you would expect, George is the owner and the barber. When you walk into his shop, you feel like you're walking onto a movie set. Everything is old fashioned, traditional style barber shop. From the pole outside, to the two people in the front window playing chess (Coming to America anybody?), to the traditional barber chair.

As I was settling in, getting ready to chop what must have been 5 lbs of hair off my head, George asked me if I wanted a shave. Not having had a shave before, I thought it might be fun, especially as I hate shaving. Its kind of like cutting the grass. I know it has to be done, but I wait as long as possible before actually doing it.

Although at times I had images of myself as a mob boss about to get "whacked", overall the experience was really nice. Its one of the few luxuries that we, as men, still have. Women get facials, manicures, pedicures, etc... We can allow a perfect stranger to run a straight blade over our neck.

I know when I put it that way it doesn't make you want to run out and get a barber shop shave, but trust me: If you've never had it done, try it out. You might never shave yourself again!!

Talk to you again soon.
Blue

Studio 60 Honours Katrina Victims

I miss The West Wing. The West Wing, for those of you that don't know, was a political drama on NBC that ran its course this past spring. It was created by Aaron Sorkin, a brilliant writer who's credits include movies The American President, A Few Good Men, and TVs Sports Night.

Fortunately for me, my craving for smart, edgy, comedic writing is quelled this season by Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip. Studio 60 marks Matthew Perry's return to television, pairing him with West Wing and Sorkin alum Bradley Whitford. Its a great show about the inner workings of a Saturday Night Live like show, and WAY BETTER than 30 Rock. If you haven't seen it yet, check it out ... you'll love it.

On last weeks episode, a group of New Orleans musicians was featured playing a rendition of O Holy Night. It was an incredible version of a holiday classic. In a move uncharacteristic of major studios and entertainment companies in general, NBC has released the recording as a downloadable MP3 for free. Thats right, you heard me correctly, FOR FREE. Not only is it a free download, but there are no restrictions placed on the file. So share it with whomever you choose: no risk of being sued by the RIAA.

The file can be downloaded at NBC's Studio 60 site.

Enjoy!!
Blue

Did the beaver let the cat out of the bag?

I was searching for additional information earlier today regarding the blue billboards, and came across a post on livejournal that might just let the cat out of the bag.

Moondrop posted a comment responding to photo_linguist's question. I was out for lunch on Thursday in Mississauga. It was raining ... cold ... just a perfect November day. After lunch, I headed over to Best Buy to pick up a new phone for the office. As I'm walking towards the store, I see a line up formed (about 12 people) to the left of the entrance. There is one tent set up, as well as a tarp rigged up to give a little shelter. I couldn't believe what I was seeing; these lunatics were standing in line for a video game console that is being released the following day. That's right, they're set up for the night !!!! I thought maybe they might be in line to buy them and resell them. You know, make a profit on eBay the same way people did with the 360 last year. So I asked a couple of them. They were all there to buy one for themselves. YOU PEOPLE HAVE GOT TO GET A LIFE .... or at least a job.

Well, that's enough ranting about people who have nothing better to do than stand in line for over 24 hours to buy a video game console that is overpriced. Lets talk about the Zune. For those of you that don't know, this is Microsoft answer to the iPod. The Zune was released in the US this past Tuesday. I thought it was going to be a North America release, but as of Thursday, the folks at Best Buy had no idea when it was coming. Funnier still is that I had to ask three store employees (all in the electronics section) before I found somebody who even knew what the Zune was. The Zune has some features that will make it attractive for some people, but I think on the whole, its going to be a flop. Not saying that Microsoft won't get it right at some point in the distant future, but by all accounts, this is not it.

The positives about the Zune are few: a bigger screen than the iPod ..... I think that's it. I know some people will tell you about the FM tuner, but my thought is why would I listen to the radio when I have 3300 songs and 71 podcasts in my pocket. Others will tell you about the fact that you can share songs with other Zune owners. This may be true, but its significantly handicapped. Shared songs can only be played three times (in whole or in part) over a three day period before being disabled. What's the point of that?

The real nail in the coffin for me is the fact that the Zune can't play songs that have been purchased songs from iTunes, or even sites that support Microsoft's own "Play's For Sure" file type. Talk about making it difficult to entice users away from their iPods ... especially when there is not difference in price. Stick with the iPod people, at least until there is something better out there.

Finally, I just want to say that I'm really looking forward to playing the Wii. The natural movements required to play any one of the Wii Sports titles look like a lot of fun. Its going to be so much easier for people like me, who aren't button mashers, to play a simple game of tennis, golf, or baseball on this system. Want to hit a forehand? Swing the controller as though its a tennis racket. Want to pitch the ball? Motion throwing the ball at the television. Definitely a revolutionary idea in video gaming .... and the reason why the Nintendo Revolution was a WAY better name. Regardless of the name, at only $279 CDN ... I want a Wii.

That's it for now ... if you own any one of these products, let us know what you think by posting a comment.

Talk to you all again soon.

Blue

BTW: Only a few more days until we find out for sure what the billboards are all about !!

Gift Billboards Con't...

An interesting thing is coming out of my fascination with these billboards: what a great way to advertise a new service. With our service being so new in Canada, we have been looking at various ways to get the word out quickly. Being fascinated by the gift billboards around Toronto (I saw 26 of them on my way to work this morning ... a 15 minute drive, including a detour to Starbucks), I figured I'd call some of the companies that provide these signs and see if it was something that is within our reach.

While gathering information, I decided to try and do some digging with regards to these billboards. Here are some of the hints I've been given:

Think Christmas and the color blue.

Large Canadian company.

I probably own one of their products.

I probably talk on one of their products daily.

This last hint is really the kicker. We're probably talking about Bell (even though I use Vonage :). That narrows the company down for us, but not necessarily the product that is being unveiled. Bell has everything from telephone service, to internet access, to cellular service, to satellite television, to ..... well, you get the point. They have a lot !!!

The campaign was also referred to as a "teaser campaign" by one company, and a "product unveiling" by another. I was also told that we'd find out officially what the product is early next week ... so let the guessing continue.

Blue

Gift Billboards

My wife and I recently moved back to Toronto. Having grown up here, I feel like I've moved back home. In fact, our apartment is about ten blocks from the house I grew up in.

Toronto is a huge change for us. For the last year we've been living in Collingwood, ON, which is a small town two hours north of the city. While it was nice for a time, you can get board ... something that doesn't happen in Toronto.

Being a slave to advertising, which you'll realize as I tell you more about myself, one of the things that I love is all the billboards, signs, car wraps, and other great forms of advertising that are present everywhere you look. Within the past two weeks, hundreds of billboards have poped up that appear to be a gift, wrapped in blue paper with a silver bow. There is no writing on them to tell you what they are advertising, or what they represent. They're just here, there, and EVERYWHERE. Sitting in our living room, I can see a billboard that has it on both sides. Just up the street, there's one at a streetcar stop (pictured above). They're also on busses and streetcars all over the city.

Truthfully, they're driving me nuts. I want to know what they're selling. In fact, I want whatever they're selling !!!! See, I told you I was a slave to advertising :)

The only hint that I can give you about who might be advertising this mysterious gift is that they must be a large corporation, with a huge advertising budget (maybe Rogers, Bell, or even the City of Toronto). Lets face it, these billboards, buss/streetcar stops, buses, and streetcars can't be cheap !!!

If you have any idea what's under the wrapping, please share with me your knowledge.

More to come.
Blue

Hello.
